ASEAN was created as a means to help settle matters and promote trade in a time when us the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia had pretty high tensions.

I believe in ASEAN’s progress. We generally have no ill will towards each other, despite our differences in culture and upbringing… must be the lack of significant historical grievances between each nation is what makes us easy to ally with each other.

There’s no reason to pour blood of the same kin, even if we speak different languages.

The interesting thing about us Asean is that we speak different language, have different form of government (democracy, communism, monarchy etc.), different religion (Christianity, Buddhism, Islam etc.) Yet united as one.
We trashtalk each other in the internet yet we are proud of each other in the world stage.

Southeast Asians are not dumb, we know that there is strength in unity and to stand on the world stage we have to work together. If we don’t unite and bring peace and prosperity to the region, we are the ones that lose. In my experience SEA nations have a very strong sense of kinship for each other no matter the differences. Some of my closest and best friends in my own personal circles are from fellow ASEAN countries. Love from Singapore to all my ASEAN brothers and sisters and to everyone in the world. World Peace.

As a South East Asian, based on my experience, we really like each other despite differences in terms of language and religion. Maybe it’s because we get oppressed by the corrupted governments where we share the similar fate. I highly believe that we will rise for sure if we don’t have corrupted leaders

The association’s UNIQUE approach with strict non-interference rules is a reflection of the culture of many of it’s asian countries. That is why no ASEAN country interfers even when there are military uprisings or supposed “human rights” issues.

We believe it is every houses’ right to sort their own problems out. That only the people know what’s best for themselves. That stable ecosystems develope through time and struggle, not external intervention.

That in times of true crisis, a unanimous vote will come about naturally for intervention. It needs to be bad enough that EVERYONE agrees there needs to be aid.

This is unlike the west whereby they tend to force ideals and way of life onto others.

The only “elephant in the room” in ASEAN is Myanmar. The atrocities committed by the millitary junta against its own people going on unabated there is partly as a consequence of ASEAN’s policy of “non-interference over the internal affairs of its members!” Sad but true.

one of the reasons for the development of the ASEAN is due to the founding members having close historical ancestors, there became an idea then that those members were to become one big country but since each country already has different languages, economic growth, the argument of where the capital would take place and other reasons, they just formed the ASEAN instead.

I met the founder of ASEAN, Dr. Thanat Khoman in the early 1990s, interestingly, he was in his 80s years of age. He was very sharp, candid,well-spoken plus no-fear attitudes. He was the ambassadors in many countries with PhD in law from Paris. He married the Thai-Singaporean lady. He make friends with both the west and the communists in those tines with mutual respect. It is no surprise that why AEAN is aiming for building mutual respect within and outside the group.

EU has was built upon empires. ASEAN was built upon solidarity of former colonies of the said empires. Very very different. In the event of US and China conflict. I believe ASEAN seek to remain neutral.

Come from China. I love ASEAN very much! Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam are counted as the most popular travelling destination among chinese tourists. Also there are many companies from China, Japan and Korea such as HUAWEI, TOYOTA and SAMSUNG come to ASEAN countries and build up factories. I believe that it could be beneficial for all of us who live in Asia when we take this trend of cooperation further!

I’m from Thailand and back when i was in school ASEAN was a full-on school subject! We had to remember all the country names, capitals, and greeting words and stuff

My country is part of ASEAN, however, we don’t really feel as citizens the economic growth, we even think it’s the opposite. If only our politicians and government systems aren’t corrupt.

Australia is an indigenous aboriginal population and they are a minority population in Australia, the majority of the population is from England, Australia’s territory is indeed in Asean, but the population is from Europe, it is impossible to join Asean

With the exception of Myanmar whose membership has been suspended due to the military coup in that country. The military coup in Myanmar is also hurting its citizens living and working overseas.

ASEAN is not crazy for power unlike the US and its allies. ASEAN can not be considered a “super power” when its first name is “Association” of South East Asian Nations. Collectively, they do not have any nuclear capability.
